Our History


Over the next few years, Stavros Tavern continued to grow in popularity being included in the Age good food guide from its first edition and for the following 25 years, proudly awarded the Best Greek on several occasions.

September 27th. doors open in Albert Park, Eleni in the kitchen, assisted by her mother and kept amused by Stavros’ mother prepares wonderful food and Stavros starts his many years of running up the 23 steps to the kitchen.

Recognition and awards. Following a glowing review by the Heralds food critic doyen Eric Page and a Gourmet magazine award from Michael Muschamp, Stavros Tavern gained an enormous following from locals and equally from non locals appreciating a new standard in Greek cuisine.

Continued growth and development of the menu with careful attention to presentation without falling into the “modern cuisine” trend.

The birth of, Stavros Event Catering. The Australian Grand Prix corporation offered 8 Melbourne restaurants catering rights at the first Formula 1 event, Stavros Tavern was the Greek restaurant chosen and this led to over twenty years of event catering .As well as all the Grand Prix events, we catered at The International Flower and Garden shows, the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, the Spring Racing Carnivals , the Royal Adelaide and the Royal Melbourne shows, and several other less major events have been a major part of our work load.

Rising from the ashes of a kitchen fire in 2002, the tavern was re built and re opened with fresh gusto after an enforced break of 9 months.

With Melbourne’s continuously changing dining trends, the temptation to modernize the traditional cuisine at Stavros was resisted, we continue to search for original recipes from remote areas of Greece and develop these recipes using great local ingredients.

The Moustache is a little greyer but the food and service are still exemplary
